Social Media Classroom
The Social Media Classroom (SMC), started by Howard Rheingold, includes a free and open-source (Drupal-based) web service that provides teachers and learners with an integrated set of social media that each course can use for its own purposes - integrated forum, blog, comment, wiki, chat, social bookmarking, RSS, microblogging, widgets, and video commenting are the first set of tools. The Classroom also includes curricular material: syllabi, lesson plans, resource repositories, screencasts and videos. The Collaboratory (or Colab), is the web service part of it. Educators are encouraged to use the Colab and SMB materials freely, and SMC will host your Colab communities if you don't want to install your own. Disclosure: eHub founder, Emily Chang, and her company, Ideacodes, worked on the public website for the SMC. (Link: Social Media Classroom)

This is the world of open source software, and Open Source Living is a new resource that puts it all (or at least a lot of it) in one place. Somebody spotted that list and put it on Stumble Upon, where it received 20,000 views. The site currently hosts a forum for community contributions. (Link: Open Source Living)

NoseRub
An inspiration, protocol and implementation of a decentralized social network. Applications with the NoseRub protocol keep information about profile data for each of the contacts. These profiles get synchronized between the applications/social networks ... and can be used by any other NoseRub service. NoseRub uses already available standards like OpenID, RSS and FOAF to provide the goal of having a truly decentralized social network. This means you build your social network in one place and have other NoseRub clients connect to it instead of you having to build multiple networks on multiple social networks. The best part is NoseRub is released under the open source MIT license. (Link: NoseRub)
